Building De Bazel Amsterdam

Wednesday 10 August 2011
Last week the Glasatelier was quite busy with ‘De Bazel’ in Amsterdam. De Bazel is a monumental building. Along with the Royal Palace on the Dam, the Rijksmuseum and the Scheepvaarthuis, it is one of the most impressive historical buildings in Amsterdam. De Bazel houses a luxurious conference center.

Architect de Bazel
The building is named for its architect Karel de Bazel (Den Helder, 14 February 1869 – Amsterdam, 28 November 1923) and was built between 1919 and 1926, commissioned by the Dutch Trade Society (Nederlandsche Handel Maatschappij). The building has been a monument since March 1991.

Stained glass
The stained glass windows in the stairwell were designed by Antoon Derkinderen (1859-1925) in 1923, and after his death completed by Joep Nicolas (1897-1972). They depict the situation in the Netherlands before the founding of the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij with the accompanying social problems such as unemployment and poverty, and the result of the work of the Society. 16 stained glass panels were removed and completely re-leaded and supporting rods provided. Some windows were damaged, and broken pieces were re-created or glued and retouched.

TU Delft new windows

Monday 08 August 2011
The Glasatelier recently received a commission to restore the windows at the entrance of the old TU (Technical University) Chemistry building (as mentioned in a lovely tile picture above the door) [foto 01]. The building was in disrepair and has been occupied by squatters. Windows were smashed and two stained glass panels were stolen – one from the right side, and the one in the middle [foto 2 and 3]. Based on the existing information, a number of designs were made to complete the panels. The mirror-image of the left panel design was used for the missing right panel. The middle panel was based on the existing abstract forms in the surrounding panels [foto 4 and 5].
This was given to the client and then suddenly a photo was made available of the windows in the original state from the outside. The lead lines were clear (foto 6). A new design was made, this time with a figure in color (foto 7).
After discussing the windows with various colleagues, a photo of the inside came to light (foto 8). The resolution of the middle figure is very low but the colors used are evident (foto 9). The figure was painted in one color but the flasks and fire have a distinct color. The design was redone [foto 10]. After approval, the figure was further developed. In foto 11 you see a detail of the head before setting into lead came. Photo 12 shows the center panel and a montage of 13 photographs, the end result. Besides the windows mentioned above there are two windows copied by Lisa Di Campli copied [foto 14]. These windows were also in the Amsterdam School style. One of the striking features is “spray" in the gold-colored areas.

Sociƫteit de Witte The Hague

Thursday 28 July 2011
Last month the Glasatelier has done work for Sociëteit de Witte in the center of The Hague. A new Byzantine coarse patterned glass was placed in the restored steel frames. In addition, a stained glass window (with 18 panels) was cleaned, re-set in lead came, and retouched as necessary.
In the pictures you see: The building, the painted stained glass windows before restoration in situ, a montage of the panels after restoration / re-leading and details of two panels.
The Glasatelier previously restored a large window in the sociëteit (> see the 'News Archive' links on this screen> 2006-August).
