A painted stained glass coat-of-arms

Many clients are interested in how stained glass is painted. Thus, a short description:

1. Two-layered glass (in this case, red on clear) is cut into an oval, then acid-resistant adhesive paper is placed on the glass and the areas of the glass that need to be clear glass are cut out from the adhesive paper. The glass is placed in a fluoric acid bath and the uppermost red layer of the glass is eaten away by the acid. You can see on the left image the glass after acid etching, on the right side contour lines have been added.

2. The contour lines are painted onto the medallion. The stained glass paint is a powder that consists of metal oxide, powdered glass and a binder, and the paint is mixed with water. In order to make the paint appropriately smooth for painting, it must be finely ground with a glass muller on a glass plate so that the composition is homogeneous. The contour lines are fired onto the glass at a temperature of 630°C (1166°F).

Appliqué window Leidschendam

A special project was the 1991 development of glass appliqué windows for the Jansen family. The client wanted colorful windows for the facade of their newly built house. To realize the project, we glued 4 x 4 cm colored glass squares on tempered 8 mm float glass. Once hardened, any residual glue was removed with a scalpel. Click for more information

Reformed Church Bleiswijk

In the Reformed Church in Bleiswijk sunlight shines directly into the church. Because of this, designer Hans van der Valk chose the theme of “light”, using air, land and water as the central elements for seven new stained glass windows in the church. The seven windows consist of approximately 1800 individual pieces of glass set in lead. The three large panels were placed on the inside of the church windows, allowing for protection and ventilation. Four panels at the emergency exit were double glazed. In 1997 the church received four old stained glass windows from the former church in Bleiswijk, so these seven new windows, installed in 2000, made the church complete. Click for more information

Bogtman in Haarlem. When the tower windows (56 meters high) were to be restored, Glasatelier Oud Rijswijk was called in. Forty-one panels were removed and taken to our atelier where they were re-leaded, the brass supports renewed and the panels remounted in a brass frame. Agnietenkapel Amsterdam

The Agnieten chapel is one of the finest-conserved cloister chapels. The Agnieten cloister, dedicated to St. Agnes, was founded on the eve of St. Agnes, 21 January 1397. In 1419 the cloister was granted the permission to build a chapel. This wooden chapel burned completely in the great city fire of 1452. In 1470 a new chapel was built in the gothic style popular in Amsterdam at that time. It was customary to built an “upper church” area for the nuns so that they could watch the choir. In this way the nuns were separated from the common people. The “lower church” was separated by a fence from the altar. The entrance to the upper church was via the cloister building; the entrance to the lower church via a street.
